.Best Breakfast/Brunch: Pretentiousness checked at the door

Full House Cafe

You don’t have to wait an hour for a stellar brunch on weekends. All you have to do is take the 580 to the 35th Street exit and Full House. No, it doesn’t have mimosas. Yes, you may have to wait ten or fifteen minutes, tops. But the cafe’s walls boast every kind of poker-related art and advertising memorabilia as eye candy while you wait, and they smoke their own meats, for heaven’s sake — the chicken in the chicken frittata, the bacon in the red flannel hash (which has beets, and therefore affects the rest of your day in a most entertaining, personal way), and a whole lot more. If you wake up a little later than usual, you can just go straight to lunch, but not too late, since this neighborhood fave stops serving at 2:30 p.m. Vegetarians can get their groove on, too, since Full House has a daily selection of homemade muffins and coffee cake (including the extraordinary coconut pecan cake), plus huge bowls of granola with yogurt. Its sides of fruit go above and beyond a couple melon chunks and some pineapple — there are blood oranges in season, strawberries, kiwis, and pears. Cash only, though. Open Tuesday through Sunday, 7:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m.
