Book Zoo

In an era dominated by big-box bookstores such as Barnes and Noble and
Borders, not to mention online giant Amazon.com, Book Zoo stands out as a rare gem:
a book store for book lovers. With an eclectic and unique selection of
cheap used books and an extremely welcoming atmosphere, Book Zoo has in
spades what the big stores try in vain to fabricate — namely,
personality. This is not the kind of place where you go to find a
specific book; this is where you go to browse and stumble across
something truly special like The Neverending Story or the
Necronomicon. Operating in the tradition of Moe’s and the
short-lived Books Not Com, Book Zoo is the quintessential Berkeley
bookstore, filled with fanzine editors, wingnuts, and peaceniks. The
confusing filing system only adds to the charm. Ask a staff member and
they’ll be more than happy to give you the guided tour.
