For many years there were only a couple of used bookstores in Alameda, and readers had to trek into Berkeley and Oakland to browse. Now Alameda finally has a great used-book place of its own. Wilmot’s, created a couple of years ago by Tim and Mary Wilmot, focuses not just on used and rare books but on drawing the community together. The store itself is small, with shelves lining the walls, creating cozy walkways. On Friday nights, the Wilmots pull back tables to make space for live musicians. Some weekend nights, the store hosts readings by Bay Area poets and authors. Whether you’re in the market for hard-to-find titles, browsing for a good read, or just want to haunt a reasonably clean, dimly lit literary space, this could be just the ticket.
