At the ABS climbing comps

Sat 12/4

The American Bouldering Series, sponsored by Eastern Mountain Sports, is a nationwide indoor climbing competition held in some 130 gyms and involving 7,500 competitors, taking place across the United States. ABS comps began in October and will continue through April 2005 — and City Rock Beach Club in Fremont is hosting the second of its four contests this Saturday from 1 to 5 p.m. Climbers compete in a variety of individual and team settings, further categorized by age and sex, and are judged on a point system as they negotiate the unique routes, or “problems,” created by professional setters (and incorporating such difficulties as steep traverses and big falls) at each of the ABS sites. Within a three-hour time limit, climbers can tackle as many problems as they wish while witnessed by a peer. The top five scores count for rankings, and each individual competitor on a team will have his/her score included in the team score.

Further comps are scheduled for January 15 and February 19, also at City Beach. Entry fees are $15 for ABS members, $20 for nonmembers. City Rock is located at 4020 Technology Pl., Fremont. 510-651-2500 or Citybeach.com. Also visit RockComps.com — Kelly Vance
