.11:45 p.m. Saturday: Best Late-Night Burger

Oscar's

Midnight is approaching, you’re hungry, and you’re in Berkeley — a surprisingly bad place to be stuck when suffering from a late-night food craving. Everything that is reasonably priced is closed by now. Then you remember — there is one place still open at this hour, a place conveniently located near downtown and the university with great, if greasy grub: Oscar’s, a Berkeley staple for four decades. The cooks and cashiers are surly, but the burgers are juicy and the fries ($1.35 for a large order) are far better than the much-celebrated ones at In-N-Out Burger. The shakes ($2.45) are yummy too. There ain’t nothing fancy on the Oscar’s menu. No vegan-friendly bean-curd burgers like every other comfort-food place in Berkeley. Just regular hamburgers or cheeseburgers for less than $5, with drive-thru available. Want something lighter? Well, you might try the hot dogs. Sweet dreams.
