A bit of an update on a previous post from the eLerts party blog. A few weeks back we announced a dance exhibition to be featured at the Best of the East Bay Party. After more planning with the crew who will be facilitating the dance portion - YAKfilms - we thought it would be interesting to go into a little more depth with them and what they're about. They are partnering with thePEOPLE, another great local group committed to nurturing the creative forces alive in the East Bay. Together we know that YAKfilms and thePEOPLE will make our All Styles Dance Battle one of the highlights of the summer.
YAKfilms is a media company that specializes in dance documentation in the Bay Area and worldwide. Started in East Oakland in 2008 as an organic way to capture street dance styles like TURF dancing, YAKfilms is now emerging as a leading image maker for dancers and dance events worldwide.
thePeople started in November 2007 when some djs and music lovers realized a shared concern that the East Bay was overlooked as a taste making force. Oakland was an obvious place to create a gathering focused on creative community building through art and culture. Resident djs Cecil, Cali, and Be Brown drop forward-looking soulful tracks from across a spectrum of genres aimed at providing a space for dancers and music lovers of all sorts.
YAKfilms and thePEOPLE are performing at the New Parish in Oakland starting after the Best of the East Bay festivities conclude in Jack London Square. You'll find an ocean of dancing bodies in the main dance floor, while world class urban dance artists of any style conjure ciphers as they experiment and battle for respect. But, the hallmark of the party may not be any of these things. It may be that on any night at thePEOPLE you will see old friends and meet some new ones.
