Students say that UC Berkeley needs to solve its own problems before holding itself up as a national leader.

2. Oakland Councilmember Desley Brooks is pushing to create a new city department on Race and Equity that would eliminate bias in city actions and services, the Trib$ reports. Brooks noted that police continue to stop and search African Americans at disproportionate rates and that neighborhoods in low-income areas do not get full access to city services.

3. About 200 hackers snatched up Burning Man tickets last week by creating an online backdoor that allowed them to go the front of the line when tickets went on sale, the Chron$ reports. Burning Man officials said that suspected hackers would be stripped of their tickets.

4. San Francisco Police Sergeant Ian Furminger, who was convicted on corruption charges after he was caught on video ripping off drug dealers, was sentenced to 41 months in federal prison, the Chron$ reports.

5. And the US Department of Homeland Security is preparing for at least a partial shutdown this weekend because Republicans in Congress are upset about President Obama’s efforts to reform US immigration policies, the Washington Post$ reports.
