1. The new Bay Bridge is riddled with substandard welds that could crack from normal day-to-day use and Caltrans knew about the problem but decided to not fix it, the Chron reports, citing public records. The welds could shorten the expected lifetime of the $6.5 billion span and could fail during an earthquake. The bridge is supposed to be earthquake safe. In addition, the SacBee$ reports that steel cables on the bridge are showing signs of rust. Engineers say corrosion makes the strands and rods vulnerable to cracking.got it wrong last week when she told a sports-talk radio host that the crown prince of Dubai was involved in the financial partnership that’s backing Oakland’s Coliseum City project, the Trib$ reports. Quan admitted through a spokesman that the Dubai prince was, in fact, not involved in the project, which is to feature a new stadium for the Oakland Raiders and perhaps a new ballpark for the A’s.
3. A five-alarm fire destroyed a Berkeley furniture store and two warehouses, the Trib$ reports. The blaze leveled Joshua Tree Furniture and storage facilities for Import Tile and The Wooden Duck furniture company. No one was injured in the big blaze near the city’s waterfront.
4. A disciple of Your Black Muslim Bakery has rekindled some of the organization’s businesses seven years after members of the group murdered Oakland journalist Chauncey Bailey, the Bay Area News Group$ reports.
5. And the state legislature is moving forward with a bill that would allow pharmacies to sell the anti-drug-overdose medicine naloxone without a prescription, the Chron reports. Drug overdose is the leading cause of accidental death in the nation; 38,000 people OD’d in 2010.
