.Monday Must Reads: A’s Owners Ask for Coliseum Lease Extension; Berkeley Family Camp to Move to Echo Lake

1. The owners of the Oakland A’s are asking for a lease extension at the Coliseum of five to ten years — on top of the two-year extension they just signed, the Trib$ reports. The request by the A’s owners provides further evidence that the team’s plan to move to San Jose likely will never materialize. The lease extension request at the Coliseum also indicates that the team’s owners remain uninterested in building a new waterfront ballpark at the Howard Terminal next to Jack London Square.

2. The City of Berkeley announced that it’s moving its summer family camp to Echo Lake Camp near Lake Tahoe after Berkeley Tuolumne Camp’s longtime home near Yosemite National Park burned down last summer, Berkeleyside reports. Berkeley is offering a five-week family camp at Echo Lake this summer — although space is limited because the site is much smaller than Tuolumne Camp.

3. Bone-dry Northern California may finally get some rain later this week when a new storm system moves into the region, the Chron reports. Meteorologists say the new storm has the potential to disrupt the high-pressure system that has dominated the West Coast for the past fourteen months and brought record-dry weather.

4. The number of confirmed deaths from this year’s flu epidemic in California reached 95 on Friday and is expected to grow to 146 this week, the LA Times$ reports. Health officials have attributed 75 of the deaths so far to the H1N1 swine flu.

5. Working-age people now make up the majority of recipients on food stamps — a first in the nation’s history, the AP reports. Many food stamp recipients work in low-wage jobs that don’t pay enough to get by.

6. And US Senator Dianne Feinstein of California is attempting to block President Obama’s plans to curtail drone strikes that kill innocent citizens and to end the NSA’s mass phone-data collection system, the Washington Post$ reports. Feinstein has become one of the fiercest backers of drone strikes and NSA spying.
