We've been impressed by the overall pacifist tone of many of the demonstrations in Oakland this week, and particularly grateful for those who stood as a buffer between protesters and cops during the anti-police brutality march on Saturday night. That said, every protest has its provocateurs and its agitators, those who think that violence is the only way to effect change. A few of them combined forces at Occupy Oakland, and put together a flier to distribute at General Assembly meetings. It looks like this:
If the Occupy movement is to succeed, it needs to employ the tenets and strategies of non-violent protest. We were disheartened by the excessive police force used against demonstrators on Tuesday, and we certainly hope that demonstrators in the Occupy movement will not resort to such childish spite at Wednesday's general strike.
