Alameda had a wild election season this year, but in the end, residents voted pretty much for the status quo. Councilwoman Marie Gilmore is the city’s new mayor, and outgoing mayor, Beverly Johnson, appears to have won a seat on the council. Councilwoman Lena Tam also appears to have won reelection. The only change: Councilman Frank Matarrese gave up his seat to run for mayor and will be replaced on the council by Rob Bonta.
San Leandro voters, however, may have selected a new mayor. Challenger Stephen Cassidy holds a slight lead over current mayor, Tony Santos, 35.5 percent to 35.1 percent, a difference of just 66 votes. However, there are still lots of late absentee and provisional ballots to count. This is also a ranked-choice contest, so the supporters of third-place finisher Joyce Starosciak (23.9%) will have a say in the final outcome.
