Emeryville now has its first poet laureate.
Janell Moon — whose latest collection Riding Free in the Blue Studebaker was selected as a winner by the Charlotte, NC-based Main Street Rag in its National Main Street Rag Poetry Contest — has just been appointed Emeryville's first-ever poet laureate. Moon's other poetry collections include Beyond Midnight and The Mouth of Home. Her previous honors include the Salt Hill National Prize, awarded by New York State's Syracuse University.
A reader with the Bay Area Poets for Peace Project, Moon is also the author of the nonfiction books Stirring the Waters: Writing to Find the Spirit ; The Wise Earth Speaks to Your Spirit; The Prayer Box: Create, Write, and Live Your Prayers; and How to Pray Without Being Religious. Wearing yet further hats, she is also a humanistic counselor, clinical hypnotherapist, and teacher of assertiveness techniques.
As a followup to the 24th annual Emeryville Arts Celebration, Moon wants to organize a literary evening next year that would showcase E-town talent.
