Oakland Police Sergeant Derwin Longmire, the embattled homicide detective who led the investigation of slain journalist Chauncey Bailey despite being friends with the prime suspect, went back to work on Monday. However, the Chron reports that Longmire will no longer investigate homicides and may face a twenty-day suspension.
Longmire came under heavy criticism for his handling of the Bailey case and the inquiry into the former Your Black Muslim Bakery. The detective appeared to help his friend, bakery CEO Yusuf Bey IV, avoid prosecution. Longmire also is accused of botching several other homicide investigations over the years.
