Jamarcus Russell, the Oakland Raiders quarterback who lost his starting position after a few too many mediocre performances, beat the Denver Broncos 20-19 yesterday with a ten-yard touchdown pass with 35 seconds to go. And watch the sportswriters get all squishy for the man! The Chron's David White: "The fallen No. 1 draft pick just might have saved his career." The Trib's Gary Peterson on the Raiders: "Forget who their presumptive starting quarterback might be. These days what matters is who finishes." After all the grim press the Raider's have gotten this season, it's nice to see our local scribes want to fall in love with them all over again. But Peterson's still got a ways to go before he'll walk down the aisle; this morning, he wrote that Russell "still looked like a guy learning to play quarterback in the NFL."
