Spenger's Fresh Fish Grotto in Berkeley will offer all U.S. military veterans a free lunch or dinner entrée this coming Sunday, Nov. 8, to thank them for their service and commemorate Veterans' Day, which is actually next Wednesday. It's the restaurant's second annual free-meals-for-vets event, with "vet" defined as anyone who as served in the active military, Army, Navy, Air Force, or Coast Guard, and who was discharged or released under conditions other than dishonorable. Vets will be asked to show ID.
In other Spenger's-doing-things-for-good-causes news, the restaurant is hosting a benefit dinner next Thursday for Berkeley's Kitchen, the nonprofit whose representatives won the Iron Chef-style Crabby Chef Competition staged by Spenger's last month. A food network that offers cooking clinics and serves low-cost meals while emphasizing sustainable ingredients, BK uses its own proceeds to support charities around the world.
Prepared by BK founder Cristina Lau and BK cook Anna Zulaica with Spenger's Executive Chef Devon Boisen, the Nov. 12 prix fixe menu will include fall satsuma mandarin tavioli with crab sauce paired with Widmer Hefeweizen; Dungeness crab crepes paired with Anchor Steam Beer; crispy crab chowder paired with Gordon Biersch Märzen; "Crab Three Way" paired with Lagunitas IPA; and crab apple orange blossom marshmallow Napoleon paired with Red Hook ESB.
