Some influential right-wing Republicans are hoping to block California GOP Senate candidate Carly Fiorina from winning their party's primary because she's too moderate. According to Talking Points Memo, US Senator Jim DeMint of South Carolina, a force in the conservative Tea-Bag movement, is backing California Assemblyman Chuck DeVore over Fiorina. DeMint was instrumental in the recent purging of a moderate Republican in an upstate New York congressional campaign. He and other conservatives backed a right-winger in that race, but their choice proved costly and paved the way for a Democratic victory.
Fiorina, the former Hewlett Packard CEO, officially launched her Senate bid yesterday, and hopes to unseat Democrat Barbara Boxer. But if conservatives attempt to block her in the GOP primary, it will force her to spend time and money fighting her right flank. In addition, she faces her own problems of having failed to vote for much of her adult life.
