The Bay Area Toll Authority is considering raising regional bridge tolls from $4 to $5 next summer. According to the Contra Costa Times, the authority also may begin charging carpoolers to get across area bridges, and charge higher tolls for Bay Bridge commuters during peak traffic periods. Carpools currently cross area bridges free of charge. The 16-member authority is scheduled to hold public hearings on the proposals in November, and could vote on the changes in January. The new rates would begin next July.
