Former state Senator Don Perata, who is running for mayor of Oakland, has been undergoing treatment for prostate cancer since May, according to the Chron. Perata said doctors found a tumor during a routine test, and that he expects a full recovery. His illness may explain why he has remained out of the spotlight for the past few months. He is the only announced candidate in the 2010 mayor’s race so far, although Councilwoman Jean Quan has been preparing a run. Mayor Ron Dellums has not yet decided whether he will seek reelection.
