Oakland developer Phil Tagami, who seems to have his hand in every major project in the city, now looks like the top choice to develop the former Oakland Army Base. Tagami, who renovated the Fox Theater and the Rotunda Building in downtown, is the leader of a development group that was chosen by a city panel and is now backed by Mayor Ron Dellums, according to the Trib. Tagami's main rival for the base is a development group known as Federal Oakland. A city council committee is scheduled to review the two competing plans for the base tomorrow.
Tagami's group, AMB/California Capital Group, proposes a giant office and industrial park for the base that would include port-related businesses, high-tech research and development, and green tech. By contrast, Federal Oakland wants to put big-box retail and other retail outlets at the base, along with a megaplex theater. At this point, Tagami's plan appears to make more sense, because it's questionable whether retail will work at such a remote location.
