House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said in a press conference this morning that the CIA lied to her about torturing prisoners. The San Francisco Democrat said that during a fall 2002 briefing, the CIA said specifically that it was not waterboarding detainees. We now know that the CIA had waterboarded one prisoner 83 times in the month of August 2002. Pelosi, who renewed her call today for a truth commission to examine Bush-era wrongdoing, also said that she learned in early 2003 from other lawmakers that the CIA had told them that it was waterboarding prisoners. That may be true, but there is no escaping the fact that Pelosi did nothing in 2003 to stop torture, or even bring it to light.
