Berkeley Mayor Tom Bates has given up his car, and now gets around town by walking or taking mass transit, according to the Chron. "I'm trying to reduce my carbon footprint to the absolute minimum," Bates explained. "I figure, if I really want to go someplace, I can just rent a car." But Bates isn't the only Bay Area mayor going green. San Francisco's Gavin Newsom takes MUNI or drives a hybrid to work. Richmond Mayor Gayle McLaughlin drives a hybrid, too. And what about Oakland Mayor Ron Dellums? You know, the guy who wants to build "a model city" and is constantly talking about green jobs? As we've previously reported, and the Chron notes today, Dellums gets chauffeured in a gas-guzzling Lincoln Town Car that gets a whopping 18 miles per gallon.
