It's another day, so it must be time for another story about a public agency raising taxes or fares, because it can't balance its budget. This time it's the state bridge toll authorities who are talking about raising tolls on Bay Area bridges by a $1 next year, according to the Chron. That would mean it will cost $5 to cross the Bay Bridge, and all other state-owned bridges in the Bay Area. So let's add this up: AC Transit is raising fares; BART is raising fares; East Bay MUD is raising water rates; the City of Oakland is considering a series of new taxes; and now bridge tolls are going up. Call it lesson No. 477: When things get tough, pass on your costs to consumers and taxpayers, because they'll just keep taking it.
