Yusuf Bey IV not only ordered the assassination of journalist Chauncey Bailey, but he kept a list of other people he wanted killed, according to the Chauncey Bailey Project and the San Francisco Chronicle. The new details emerged from a recording of a statement given to prosecutors by Devaughndre Broussard. Broussard, who says he executed Bailey at Bey IV's request, is going to testify against Bey IV, his former boss, in exchange for a lighter sentence. Bey IV, the CEO of the now defunct Your Black Muslim Bakery, is said to have ordered Bailey's assassination because of a story the journalist was working on about the bakery's financial problems and because of prior stories that Bailey had written about Bey IV's father, Yusuf Bey. Bey IV once said of Bailey; "That's the motherfucker that killed my dad," according to Broussard. Bey IV was said to have blamed Bailey's stories for the stress they placed on his father.
To be honest, that was an odd statement for Bey IV to have made because Bailey was not known for writing hard-hitting pieces about the elder Bey or the bakery. Bailey, in fact, shied away from criticizing Yusuf Bey or the bakery over the years - even after the elder Bey was arrested for raping young girls. I know this because I worked with Bailey at the Oakland Tribune from 1999 to 2004. Bailey did cover the criminal charges against the elder Bey in a straight-up fashion. But before Yusuf Bey's death from cancer in 2003, there was only one journalist in the East Bay who had the courage to go after him, and that was Express reporter Chris Thompson. It makes you wonder whether Bey IV was woefully misinformed about Bailey or that he felt Bailey betrayed the family when he didn't publicly defend the elder Bey after he was arrested on rape charges.
