The Evil That John Yoo Wrought, Ctd.

President Barack Obama has reportedly stood up to critics within his own administration and plans to release this afternoon John Yoo's original torture memo that he finished in August 2002, along with other secret torture memos from the Department of Justice, according to the New York Times. The existence of Yoo's original memo has been known for many years, but the Bush administration kept it under wraps, releasing only a subsequent memo that was based on it. Top Obama intelligence official John Brennan and CIA Director Leon Panetta were said to be opposed to releasing the memos for fear that they would harm the CIA's relations with other countries because the documents are so damning. Obama deserves credit for doing the right thing and standing by his pledge for government transparency. Both the United States and UC Berkeley have to come to grips with the evil that John Yoo wrought.
