The Cal men's basketball team is rolling. Winners of a triple overtime game this weekend in Washington, the Basketball Bears are ranked in the top 25 for the first time this millennium. So when they go down Stanford way and punk the Cardinal this weekend, they'll have a ten-game winning streak, be in first place in the Pac-10 and the only East Bay team worth a damn until...I'll get back to you on that.
The Golden ones are dealing with college basketball's more distant three-point line by leading all of Division I in converting triples..by a lot. Almost 50% of the treys are being placed in their proper receptacle and the result is a team that's fun to watch and winning.
Coach Mike Montgomery was kind of a shrug, when Cal announced that the long-time Stanford head man was coming to town. Considering that Monty had most recently washed out with the Warriors a few seasons back, it seemed like recycling of the blandest sort. Instead the low-profile coach is leading a soon to be high interest team. Two teams in the Pac-10 outrank the Bears, but neither has faced the wrath of Cal.
Considering the ballers from Berkeley will be favored in their next three games, we could be looking at an 18-2 start and 7-0 in league which would render February moot for a bid to the big tournament. So join now before the crowds say "I was with them then..." Now is the new Then for Cal hoops.— Kibby Kleiman
