As if to prove Chip Johnson’s point, one of the Oakland Police Department’s most professional and innovative officers has accused Chief Wayne Tucker of essentially trying to bribe the head of the Oakland police officers union. According to the Oakland Tribune, Lieutenant Lawrence Green claims that Tucker, who was facing a vote of no confidence from rank-and-file officers, unilaterally promoted cop union head Bob Valladon to acting sergeant, a position that would significantly boost his pension just as he’s about to retire. And wouldn’t you know, the no-confidence vote just went away! We know Lawrence Green; he started a popular North Oakland crime listserv a few years back, displaying an ingenuity not always on display within the department. And we know Bob Valladon. In fact, we’ve spoken face to face at the Oakland police union headquarters, which is no easy task, considering his intense loathing for reporters. And we can report he’s a complete jerk. We have no trouble believing this one.
