It's the sad, resigned tale of Susan Gluss, the Boalt law school's media flack. She moved to Oakland for all the right reasons (the culture, the distinctiveness, the diversity, the low-key lifestyle) and did her best to stay there, despite the gunfire, the menace, and the numerous times she got robbed. But she just couldn't keep it up, and split for Marin County. Chip Johnson's latest column was paired with her Chron essay, and we can see why. Here are her parting words for Oakland: "I admired Mayor Ron Dellums as a congressman, but he's useless to this city. If you can't protect residents from random violence and crime, then it doesn't matter how walkable a city is. It's time to leave."
