UC Bigwigs To Crowd: We're Screwed

UC President Mark Yudof, Cal Chancellor Robert Birgeneau, and Boalt law dean Christopher Edley showed up at a Pauley Ballroom panel discussion yesterday to tell the assembly all about the university's crippling financial problems. The money picture is so bleak, and likely to get so much bleaker, that university officials will probably have to cut back on students who live in the state and admit more out-of-state students, just so they can demand a higher tuition from them. According to the Daily Cal, Brigeneau put it rather succinctly: "The trade-off, frankly and harshly, is between poor in-state students and wealthy out-of-state students." So much for Clark Kerr's dream of affordable education for all.
