Oakland schools Police Chief Art Michel should be fired for abusing Oakland Tribune photojournalist Jane Tyska. That's the conclusion of an unusually blunt Tribune editorial today -- and we couldn't agree more. Michel exhitibed the epitome of unprofessionalism when he cussed and berated Tyska, falsely accused her of vandalism, and then confiscated her work during an Oakland demonstration last month. Tyska was on the job when Michel went after her, and his actions were clearly over the top.
We haven't praised the Trib's editorial page that often over the years. It tends to be a little to wishy-washy for our taste. But today's piece is excellent. We've known Tyska for years, and are great admirers of her work. She one of the best photojournalists in the Bay Area and has won numerous excellence in journalism awards. If you haven't seen the video that she shot of the demonstration and of Michel, check out the link embedded in today's editorial.
