Responding to Chauncey Bailey Project reports that Oakland homicide detective Derwin Longmire ignored key evidence in the murder of reporter Chauncey Bailey, and interfered with other criminal investigations into the Yusuf Bey family, Mayor Ron Dellums called for outside agencies to examine the Bailey case and Longmire’s involvement in it. Longmire had been a longtime associate of the Bey family, meeting them through the city’s efforts to expand relations between the cops and the black community. During the investigation into Bailey’s murder, Longmire apparently never examined a tracking device cops placed on the car of clan leader Yusuf Bey IV; data from that device suggests that Bey was stalking Bailey the night before he was killed, and drove past his body 40 minutes after the assassination. Attorney General Jerry Brown told the Chauncey Bailey Project that he would be happy to offer his services if asked.
