In this edition of Buy Curious: In case you hadn't heard, our beloved (only?) locally designed high-end shoe store Twenty Two Shoes is closing this month. (Psst major sale going on now!) Looking for something totally different? Chillin Productions holds another fabulous independent shopping event at Minna this Saturday. Dust off your old-school outfit for this weekend's vintage car show at Forbidden Island in Alameda. While you're at it, stay on the island for the Alameda Point Antiques and Collectibles Faire.
Twenty Two Shoes Sale
That's right, this month the shoe store will close its doors after six glorious, stylish years. Mourn the loss by snatching up as many pairs as your arms can hold today, when the store marks down its entire merchandise up to 75 percent off. We snagged some adorable black snakeskin peep-toe flats last weekend, and the saleslady told us the shoes have been flying off the shelves. One customer even got the designer to sign a pair. Who knows, maybe they'll become collector's items? (In which case I've made sound investments. I think I'm up to seven? Hey, they were all on sale!)
When: Today, until whenever everything's gone, starting at 11 a.m.
Where: 5856 College Ave., Oakland (and the SF store too, at 2277 Union St.)
Yeah, we know we keep urging you to go to these things, but seriously! If you like fashion, unique finds, scoring deals, and supporting independent, local designers, then you MUST attend this Saturday's Chillin at 111 Minna. The last event drew hundreds (thousands?) of people (not all at once, thankfully), who happily pored over jewelry, handbags, dresses, screen-printed T-shirts galore, lingerie, vintage clothes, baby clothes, and tons of other stuff while sipping cocktails and grooving to the DJ. (Check out the web site for a list of designers.) Best of all, the prices were beyond affordable, so even with that cover charge you still feel like you're scoring big time. (Word of caution, however: wear layers as it gets hot in there!)
When: Saturday, October 4, 8 p.m.-2 a.m.
Where: 111 Minna, San Francisco
How much it'll cost ya: $6 at the door
Vintage Car Show
Our favorite tiki bar (OK, our favorite bar PERIOD) Forbidden Island hosts its first ever vintage car show this weekend, and if it's hugely popular tiki sale is any indication, expect hoards of folks at the unassuming corner of Lincoln and Sherman. What does this have to do with shopping, you ask? Well, Alameda being the East Bay's center of all things old-school (barbershops, candy stores, ice cream stores, antiques, and, hence, the plethora of the vintage-obsessed), expect to see some very true-to-period-style dress, since this car show is strictly for pre-1965 wheels. Plus, their fruity mixed drinks are to die for (hello, Zombie!). Uh, we just sounded like Palin there
When: Sunday, October 5, 3 p.m.
Where: 1304 Lincoln Ave., Alameda
Antiques by the Bay
While you're on the island, stop over to the real shopping event, the world-renowned Alameda Point Antiques and Collectibles Faire, held every first Sunday. Browse more antiques than you could know what to do with, as well as the stylish folks roaming the parking lot (check out fashionist's photos from the monthly event here (scroll down)).
When: Sunday, October 5, 6 a.m.-3 p.m.
Where: Alameda Point, check web site for directions
How much it'll cost ya: $5-$15 depending on how early you arrive Got a tip for Buy Curious? Store opening? Sale? Send it to buycurious [at] eastbayexpress [dot] com
