The Fremont mayor’s race is heating up, and the big issue on the plate is the Oakland Athletics’ plan to build a new, state-of-the-art ballpark and condo village in town. The incumbent, Bob Wasserman, is a longtime supporter of the plan, while his primary opponent, former mayor Gus Morrison, opposes it on the grounds that game days would snarl the sleepy burg in traffic. A third candidate, Councilman Steve Cho, wants a public referendum on the deal. The Fremont Argus suggests that the vote could be critical for the future of the team’s plans: “An overwhelming Morrison victory could be perceived as a referendum against the A’s.”
