The Oakland Police Department just emailed us a bulletin about an inspiring project this week to honor crime victims: "In planning for a commemorative ceremony on September 19, 2008 at 10:30 a.m. to honor victims of violent crime in Oakland, more than 40 neighbors came together at Nicol Park, the site of a fatal shooting last June. Together they planted flowers and worked on an art project — a visual representation of puzzle pieces — depicting a healthy lifestyle and neighborhood diversity. This art project will be unveiled at the commemorative ceremony and is entitled 'Putting the Pieces Together.' The focus of the art project and the commemorative ceremony is on community healing. The day following the commemorative ceremony, Saturday, September 20, 2008, there will be free workshop on gangs and prostitution from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. (breakfast will be served) at Patten University, 2433 Coolidge Ave. Call (510) 238-2163 to register. There is limited seating with preference given to Oakland residents."
