.KPFA Fight Makes the Press

Did a swarm of fascist pigs beat down a pregnant black woman at the KPFA studio? Or was the woman a KPFA volunteer nutjob who raised hell until the cops had to restrain her? That’s the question in the latest chapter of the fight between KPFA “unpaid staff” and Pacifica management. A week and a half ago, the station’s business manager called the cops and claimed that volunteer programmer Nadra Foster refused to leave the studio and was causing some sort of disturbance. According to the San Francisco Chronicle, six officers ultimately held Foster down, restrained her with a device known as a wrap, and hauled her off to the hoosegow. The incident has Foster’s supporters outraged and management just a little mortified. For months, volunteer programmers have been fighting with managers and some of the paid staff over whether KPFA was professionalizing its format in a bid to become more like National Public Radio; the Foster incident is sure to ramp the fight up a notch.
