We haven't been sure how to mark the passing of Bob Thomas, who ran the business side of the East Bay Express for six years in the 1990s. So here it is: Bob was a good man. Steady, confident, generous, and quick to smile beneath his salt and pepper 'stache. The Express of the '90s wasn't always the most efficient operation in the world, operating under the romantic notion that our creative chaos would work itself out in the end. Bob was the grownup who made sure the ads got sold, the circulation was working, the numbers got crunched; he took care of all the things our rumpus room needed. It wasn't fair that disease took his life so soon. For more stories of his life, read here and here. A memorial service will be held at Burlingame's First Presbyterian Church, at 1 p.m. on August 9.
