.Oakland SRO Tenants in Desperate Fight Against Eviction

The California Hotel, a city-subsidized, 150-unit affordable housing complex on San Pablo, is broke and trying to evict its tenants. But the tenants have sued to stay and, according to the Oakland Tribune, have won a reprieve until both parties can argue their case in court. The city of Oakland gave nonprofit Oakland Community Housing Inc. more than $5 million to buy and rehab the building to rent it out to the city’s poorest citizens. After the nonprofit mismanaged its finances and was on death’s door, Oakland gave it another $1.5 million to stave off creditors while managers got their shit together. Now, apparently, they’ve blown it so badly that they can’t keep it going, and are trying to evict the tenants in an apparent effort to liquidate their assets. Tenants’ attorney John Murcko told the Trib that one reason the nonprofit is so broke is that they’ve kept half the units vacant and aren’t collecting any rent as a result. Either way, Oakland Community Housing comes off looking like a bunch of Grade-A jokers.
