"I have elected to terminate you, effective immediately." That's Oakland Mayor Ron Dellums wrote in a letter when he really and truly fired former City Administrator Deborah Edgerly yesterday. According to the Trib, the last straw appeared to be letters Edgerly sent to him and the City Council, declaring her intention not to retire after all, but to stay on until her name was cleared in an investigation. Edgerly's lawyer has called the decision unlawful, which seemed to indicate she planned to sue the city. According to the Chron, a friend of Dellums summed up the end of the affair like so: "He had given her every possible way to go out with some kind of dignity - notwithstanding the allegations - but that she wasn't putting anyone but herself first"
