The California Institute for Regenerative Medicine, the nonprofit charged with disbursing $3 billion in stem cell research funds, is due to shell out the first gob of hot, sticky money, and UC Berkeley has lined up to ask for a hefty chunk. The first disbursement round is designed to fund the creation of stem cell labs, building the infrastructure needed to start the actual research. Although Stanford has the most ambitious plans, the Chron reports that UC Berkeley has applied for a grant to build to stem-cell labs in the new Li Ka Shing Center for Biomedical and Health Sciences. Hmm. A lot of those researchers will probably speak some East Asian languages. What a shame Cal just defunded many of its language courses…
