File this under Isn't That Nice: the international foundation Atlantic Philanthropies has announced it will spend $15 million to operate medical and dental clinics at fifteen middle schools in the toughest parts of Oakland. With this grant, the Oakland Tribune reports, school officials will offer after-school and summer programs, counseling, English as a second language classes, and even help for parents filing their taxes. The grant is part of an effort to arrest the downward spiral of violence, substance abuse, and criminality that school officials claim starts in middle school.
