San Francisco Chronicle columnist Chip Johnson takes a shot at Oakland Mayor Ron Dellums, for his continuing absentee approach to running the city. This time, Johnson compiles a series of high-profile crimes and disasters that have beset the city since January, and recites the bland press releases that Dellums apparently thinks will solve the problem. When bullies fractured the skull of a seven-year-old child on school property, Dellums announced that his office will "monitor the investigation." When a gang of armed robbers terrorized a renowned restaurant, Dellums's release declared, "These robberies are absolutely unacceptable." And so on. Johnson concludes, "Oakland needs a full-time mayor in the here-and-now whose feet - and head - are firmly set on terra firma and totally focused on fixing what ails this town - not the rest of the world."
