.Cal Researcher May Save Millions from Malaria

We can be fairly jaundiced when it comes to University of California politics, but then along comes a story that reminds us why we care so much. According to the Oakland Tribune, UC Berkeley researcher Jay Keasling has just signed a contract with a French drug company to bring his innovative malaria drug procution process to market. Currently, malaria drugs, which focus on killing the mosquito vector, are extremely difficult to produce. But Keasling has been working to bio-engineer a bacterium that will produce the compound at dirt-cheap prices. This breakthrough could save the lives of millions of people who still die from malaria in the Third World.
