As the investigation into Cosco Busan pilot John Cota continues, authorities are beginning to ask why they let this guy drive a ship full of oil around in the first place. Cota, federal investigators have discovered, was busted for a DUI in 1999, was suspended in 2004 for starting a fight with a ship’s crew, and rounded a freighter in 2006. In addition, as the San Francisco Chronicle reports, investigators are particularly annoyed with the Coast Guard, which let Cota pilot the ship after he informed them of all the drugs he was taking to combat depression, anxiety, and sleep disorders.
