Everyone around the country is still digesting Boalt law professor John Yoo's latest secret torture memorandum, and it looks like another disturbing East Bay connection has emerged. According to Harper's Magazine correspondent Scott Horton, Yoo's memo, in which he off-handedly declares that the Fourth Amendment is null and void, was commissioned by Donald Rumsfeld's lawyer William Haynes. Apparently, Haynes was getting some inconvenient complaints by Pentagon lawyers that torture is, you know, illegal, and he asked Yoo to write him a brief justifying crimes against humanity. So where is Haynes now? Why, he's general counsel for Chevron, of course.
