Cal agrees to hire Stanford retread

If you can't beat them (and Cal can't) might as well steal them. ESPN reports that today, on the eve of the Final Four, former Stanford head man Mike Montgomery will fill the vacant position of men's basketball coach at Cal. The Golden Bears hope to return to the world of college hoops elite, but hey, anyone can have a tough five decades. Monty's Stanford teams were regular participants in the tournament but after going pro with Golden State, Montgomery decided that he had seen enough basketball for a while and decided to give coaching a rest. Now he arrives at Cal with a gaudy collegiate win-loss record, the respect of the coaching fraternity and the willingness to take on the Cal challenge. Wait, isn't that how Ben Braun got started?— Kibby Kleiman
