.Big UC Berkeley Computing Initiative Doomed?

UC Berkeley may have partnered with Microsoft and Intel to create an ambitious new computer research center, but it looks like the center’s goals may well be impossible. Microsoft and Intel have donated $20 million to the center, and Cal expects to contribute $7 million in state funds. But the goal of the center, which is to find a way to program multiple core chips in order vastly increase a computer’s capacity, may never be possible, despite all the money being thrown at it. According to Electronics Weekly, Tensilica CEO Chris Rowen appeared at San Francisco’s GlobalPress Summit Conference earlier this week and declared the center’s goals “the biggest single unsolved, and perhaps unsolvable, computing problem.” We’ll just have to wait and see.
