Ugh, what a week for news! Abandoned, foreclosed-home swimming pools in East Contra Costa County are breeding grounds for West Nile Virus (which isn't going away, and oh, there's no budget this year to keep it in check); nine-year-old kids in Dallas are snorting low-grade heroin called cheese; social security is gonna be broke by 2041, Medicare by 2019; a chunk of ice seven times the size of Manhattan broke off a glacier in Antarctica, never to return; US death toll reaches 4,000 in Iraq; not to mention everyone's upset about the Fed's bailing out Bear Stearns. And the list goes on and on. The good news? At least one wolverine is roaming Tahoe. Sheesh. It's enough to make your head spin! So there's no better time than this weekend to soothe your soul with complimentary mani/pedis, makeovers, and massages not to mention shopping. More fever-reducing news after the jump

Eco-Friendly, and Not Frumpy!
Local sustainable and recycle-friendly designers got a nice eight-page spread in the April issue of Diablo Magazine. For a while, so-called "green" designs tended to suffer from severe frumpy-ness (think drawstring hemp pants or shoulder-slung woven bucket bags), but this new generation is hip to structure: stream-lining, ruching, ruffles, and high-waisted skirts. Among the designers represented are Berkeley ceramicist Joanna Mendicino, Oakland's Fwraps, furniture-maker David Brunicardi, and organic denim line Del Forte (who knew?). Here's a list of local stores that carry the eco-friendly designs:
Atomic Garden, 5453 College Ave., Oakland, (510) 923-0543,
August, 5410 College Ave., Oakland, (510) 652-2711,
Laurel Book Store, 4100 MacArthur Blvd., Oakland, (510) 531-2073
Magnet, 2508 San Pablo Ave., Berkeley, (510) 848-1966
Treehouse Green Gifts, 2935 College Ave., Berkeley, (510) 204-9292
Wildlife Works, 1849 Union St., San Francisco, (415) 738-8544 Upcoming Events
