Study Suggests Area's High Asthma Rates May Be in Error

Black children in industrial East Bay neighborhoods such as West Oakland, Richmond, and North Richmond have long been found to suffer from disproportionately high rates of asthma. Now, new Canadian research suggests that people of African and Asian descent run the risk of misdiagnosis for asthma because their breath contains higher levels of nitrous oxide, Toronto's Globe and Mail reports. The presence of nitrous oxide in the breath has long been interpreted as a sign of asthma. The study was based on a very small sample, and further research is warranted.
