Name That Smell (Something Else)

The Berkeley City Council will talk about revoking Pacific Steel Casting's permits at its meeting on Tuesday, the Chron's Carolyn Jones writes this morning. Although the West Berkeley foundry has settled with one group and is negotiating with another, neighbors are fed up, say the various city officials quoted in the story. But perhaps a bigger question, at least for those of us who don't routinely set fire to our kitchenware: Why has it become standard journalistic practice to repeat neighbors' assertions that Pacific Steel smells like "burning pot stench"? Since this story's been in the paper frequently, and is likely to continue to do so, can't we come up with a more meaningful description? -- Eric Simons
