Anyone who’s worked a graveyard copyediting shift, as this reporter has, can understand how such things happen, but it doesn’t mean we can’t poke fun at it when it does. A story on an Oakland gang summit that appeared in the Bay Area section of this morning’s Chronicle bore this headline: “GANGS” — no, not “Oakland Hosts Gang Summit,” just “GANGS.” In the print edition, the headline ran under the regional identifier “California,” and the online version joined those together to make it “CALIFORNIA GANGS,” which, while a bit more specific, still compels the reader to say, “Okay … and? What will tomorrow’s headlines be? CRIME? POLITICS? TEENS? DOGS? GOOGLE? One can hardly wait.
