Oakland police have offered Mayor Ron Dellums a personal bodyguard from the force but not for free. According to police spokesman Roland Holmgren, the mayor's office will have to pay for a police bodyguard out of the mayor's budget and replace the position so the department doesn't lose a crime-fighter.
Dellums' communications director Karen Stevenson says no decision has been made yet as to whether Dellums will hire a bodyguard from the police, a private security firm, or at all. During the campaign and transition, Dellums has used guards to protect him from his adoring public and reporters.
By the end of his term, Jerry Brown didn't have a bodyguard and walked around his sketchy Uptown neighborhood unprotected. That is, unless you consider Brown's flea-bitten black lab, Dharma, protection.
